Iraqi woman sheds 15 kg fat

The morbidly obese patient?s stomach was hanging till her knees, reports Vidya Krishnan.

This Iraqi woman should be feeling lighter now. Afterall, in a rare surgery lasting over five hours, 15 kilograms of fat was removed from the abdominal cavity. The dense layer of fatty tissue and hanging skin have also been removed by performing panniclectomy.

Warka Younis, who weighed 175 kilograms, decided to come to India after failing to find a surgeon in Iraq. “I had to do something about the weight as it affected my basic routine. I had problem in even maintaining basic hygiene. I was having difficulty in walking, standing and even sitting. Coming to Delhi was an obvious choice as my son is studying here. We were in touch with the doctor through the Internet and I exchanged details of my case before coming here,” said the 50-year-old patient.

Patients who opt for panniclectomy have fat extending up to their knees, over the hips, and around the back. “The obesity usually comes with other disorders like back problems, skin infections, rashes and ulcers. Apart from, having problems in maintaining hygiene, the patient was suffering from diabetes and hypertension. Panniculectomy is a weight reduction surgery for a targeted area and it is not like abdominoplasty, which tightens the muscle as well as removes excess skin and fat. In panniculectomy, we remove excess skin and fat but we do not do anything to the muscles,” said Ajaya Kashyap, Chief of Plastic Surgery, Fortis Hospital.
