Today he's even being tipped for an Oscar nomination for The Namesake, he's a crowd puller and he's the critics' darling. So if you rub Irrfan Khan the wrong way, you'd better be prepared for fireworks.
Recently when director Neeraj Pathak made Khan wait endlessly for a shot on the Khandala location for Right ya Wrong, the actor made his displeasure felt. He walked off and vamoosed in his car to Mumbai.
It is learnt that Pathak was ‘favouring' Sunny Deol over Khan. While he would can Deol's shots first, Khan was asked to hang around. Subsequently, Khan was made to cool his heels for so long that he was impatient and irritated.
Incidentally, there's a story behind why Khan agreed to be a part of the project. He had turned down the role, forcing Pathak to approach Kay Kay Menon for the movie which revolves around an international terrorist conspiracy .
Menon agreed. But then there was the classic twist in the plot. Menon was out and Khan was in.
Pathak's curt response to the story is, "Not true."
Khan was taken aback. "Who told you about that?" he enquired via SMS. He later added, "I was supposed to leave that morning.. but I didn't. I was there till early noon."
But wasn't he made to wait endlessly?
"No. I was clear about what I was to do. Also, I don't want more importance than my co-actors. But I won't shy away from showing my concern if I don't get mine. Period."
