The Gujarat policemen have said Kumar’s role was not limited to just “triggering a false alert to facilitate the staged encounter but (he was) part of the conspiracy and supplying of AK 47 rifle that was planted on the deceased”.

Ishrat Jahan and three of the accomplices were killed on the outskirts of Ahmedabad in June 2004 by the Gujarat police, which said they were on a mission to murder chief minister Narendra Modi.

The CBI’s chargesheet and final report will be filed on July 4, in accordance with the Gujarat high court directive.

The agency has grilled Kumar twice in the Ishrat case amid a dispute between the CBI and IB on the propriety of such an act.

“Intelligence alert is just a minor aspect of our probe. We have conducted a detailed probe of the conspiracy and those who were involved in it,” a senior official involved in the investigation said.
