Bahrain's new parliament will be dominated by Islamists who are likely to control up to two-thirds of the seats, according to official results.
Al Wefaq, the largest Shiite society in Bahrain, has won 16 of the 40 seats.
The group is likely to further increase its hold on the 40-seat chamber on December 2 during the second round of elections, as one of its candidates, along with three other opposition candidates they support, remains in the running. It also won 18 municipal seats in Saturday's polls.
Sunni groups Salafi Al Asala and Muslim Brotherhood an offshoot of the Al Menbar won four seats each, making it a total of 24 seats for Islamists from both sects in the first round.
An equal number of four independent candidates also registered a clear win- taking the total number of confirmed parliamentary results declared officially on Sunday to 28.
While Al Asala is familiar with the parliamentary grounds after its stunning victory in the 2002 polls, Al Wefaq is making its debut in the world of legislative action.
Bahraini women, however, failed to add to the single seat secured by Lateefa Al Gaood in the Council of Representatives after she ran unchallenged in her constituency.
