J-K bans mobile phones in govt education institutions

The Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday put a ban on use of mobile phones in all government-run educational institutions across the state.

The decision was taken to prevent interference in the teaching-learning activities, state Education Minister Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed said.

“The ban will be strictly imposed henceforth and stern action would be taken against the violators,” he said during a community mobilisation programme for promotion of education under National Programme for Education of Girls at Elementary Level (NPEGEL) at Bider-Kokernag, 60 kms from Srinagar.

Underscoring importance of girl education in contemporary world, he said for holistic development of the society, women folk have to be brought at par with men. “How can we talk of equality of status when more than half of our women are illiterate?” he asked.

Deliberating on various initiatives being taken by the government for expansion and up-gradation of educational infrastructure across the valley, he said as many as 4,014 primary schools have been opened and 4,353 centres were upgraded to primary level.

Besides creating the physical infrastructure, the staff was also being rewarded by way of timely promotions, the Minister said.
