An official source said state agencies had information of Fai being involved in diverting funds to Hurriyat in the Valley.

The FBI arrested Kashmir-born Fai, 62, on Tuesday from his house in Fairfax in the US, on charges of receiving money from the ISI and using it to influence US policy on Kashmir.

Jammu and Kashmir director general of police Kuldeep Khoda said Fai figured in several cases in the state and there was “lots of material” against the lobbyist for Kashmir’s self-determination.

“He has been figuring in lots of things in the past, like what the US has already conveyed – the diversion of ISI funds for anti-national activities in India and particularly in Jammu and Kashmir,” Khoda had said on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, separatists are galvanising street support against Fai’s detention and their ire is directed at India not the US. Hardline Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani said, “Fai’s arrest was carried out at India’s behest to weaken the Kashmir’s struggle at diplomatic level.”
