Fresh flash floods and landslides in Jammu and Kashmir left 68 persons dead on Friday, taking the death toll in the state’s worst floods in nearly six decades to 88.
A private bus, which was submerged in the Gambhir river in Rajouri district on Thursday, was retrieved on Friday evening. The police said 24 bodies of passengers were recovered, while 40 others were missing. The bus was ferrying a wedding party when it overturned in a flash flood.
Meanwhile, the Jammu-Srinagar highway remained closed for the second day due to landslides triggered by rain. Nearly 1,200 commercial vehicles are stranded on the highway.
To review the situation, union home minister Rajnath Singh and minister of state (MoS) in the Prime Minister’s office (PMO) Jitendra Singh will visit the state on Saturday.
The army joined the relief operations as the deluge wreaked havoc, damaging roads, dozens of bridges and buildings and crops.
