It’s being said that since the UPA has come to power, there has been little progress in the peace process. Recently, there have also been attacks. What is your assessment of the situation?
The situation in J&K has improved. The number of incidents has come down. In 2002, 11 incidents were taking place every day. In 2003, it came down to nine. In 2004, the number has come down to six. Infiltration into J&K has also come down.
Why has the infiltration come down?
It may be because of the border fencing, the vigilance of our forces, and the help given by the people and the government of J&K. Partly, it is also because of the attitude of Pakistan.
There is some reduction from that side?
Yes.
Are you going to J&K?
I will be going there on the sixth of next month.
Who will you meet there?
I will meet the CM, governor, MLAs, and leaders of various political parties, and those other people who want to meet us. I will also visit the border, and Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh separately.
Will you talk to the Hurriyat?
That depends on them. If they come to talk, we will definitely talk.
What is the aim of your visit?
When I go there I will see for myself how the work is going on, how our forces are performing, what people are thinking.
