Chief minister Mamata Banerjee, in an attempt to underplay Wednesday’s Jadavpur University incident wherein the police roughed up agitating students, said that the media was giving it unnecessary footage in an effort to tarnish Bengal’s image.

On the other hand, the governor and chancellor of Jadavpur University, Keshari nath Tripathi, asked for the intervention of education minister, Partha Chatterjee and home secretary Basudeb Sen to resolve the crisis.

“This is an effort is to malign West Bengal’s image. We would not allow (anyone) to do that,” the CM said at a function on Thursday.
Following her comment, the TMC chief came under attack from the BJP and CPI(M) leaders. “From rapes to police atrocities, everything is a small matter for our chief minister. We would like to know what does serious mean to her,” remarked state BJP president Rahil Sinha.

“I have asked the minister concerned and the home secretary to look into the matter and resolve the issue. I have said what I had to,” said Tripathi.
