Finance and defence minister Arun Jaitley, who was admitted to a private hospital on Monday for a diabetes management surgery, has taken little rest and has instead been regularly monitoring work from the hospital, officials in his ministry said.
On Wednesday, Jaitley approved the setting-up of a committee to examine the unclaimed amounts remaining in public provident fund and post office savings schemes.
“He has been hands-on even while in the hospital. He has been in touch with his ministry and also gave approvals for certain matters…He has instructed his officials to get in touch with him if required,” said a senior finance ministry official on condition of anonymity.
On Tuesday, Jaitley underwent bariatric surgery to bring down his uncontrolled blood sugar levels. Also known as weight loss surgery, the procedure is used to cure co-morbid conditions like diabetes, hypertension, sleep-related disorders etc.
Sources said that minister would continue to work from home until he resumes office next week. Doctors at the hospital said that Jaitley, 61, was recovering well and may be discharged in a day or two.
“His recovery has been uneventful. We made him walk within hours of surgery. He walked in the corridor on Thursday,” said Dr Pradeep Chowbey, director of minimal access surgery, bariatric and metabolic surgery at Max healthcare hospital.
