The IED had been planted along a route used for patrolling by the army. Army sources said the jawans, who were targets of the IED, were probably not fully acquainted with the area as they were in the process of replacing the existing army unit.

The explosion was the first major incident along the Indo-Pak border in Jammu and Kashmir after the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif in Delhi last month.

Two days before Modi was to take the oath of office, a jawan had died in cross border firing on May 19, also in Poonch.

Defence spokesperson Lt Colonel Munish Mehta said the army has launched a search operation in the area after the blast.

The BAT was also believed to be responsible for the beheading of the Indian jawan two years back in Poonch area.
