Jayasuriya, 36, had dislocated a shoulder during a limited-over match in August and since been in and out of the team because of recurring injuries.

A half-fit Jayasuriya played in a six-match limited overs series against India in October but was overlooked for the three Test matches. He was recalled to tour New Zealand but a shower-slip aggravated his injury after playing only one match.

Opening batsman Avishka Gunawardene and fast bowler Lasith Malinga who are currently touring New Zealand were also dropped from the squad.

Michael Vandort, a 25-year-old opening batsman, finds a place in the national team after more than three years. Vandort averages 79 runs in his two Test appearances against Bangladesh with a top score of 140 runs.

Medium pacer Nuwan Kulasekara and 18-year-old fresher Chamara Kapugedara have also been included in the squad.

The series also involving South Africa begins in Melbourne on Jan.13.
