The team is going from the microbiology department of the SGPGIMS to collect blood samples of the infected people and study those samples at the institute. After the study of the virus, course of treatment will be evolved.

At least 272 cases came to light since January 2006 and 51 patients have died. Investigations were being done on 134 patients at BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur and Regional Lab, Swasthya Bhawan, he said. “Out of 134 cases, 12 have been found JE positive,” he added.

“Assistance is being sought from National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, to detect the virus. A team of experts is being sent to to Gorakhpur for this purpose,” he said.

The DG (medical and health) also said that all the government hospitals in the western UP were alerted about encephalitis.
