The diktat against girls wearing jeans in degree colleges by the so-called Uttar Pradesh Principals’ Council has been done away with.

The state government has issued a stern warning to the principals’ council that imposed the dress code on girl students in aided colleges.

Secretary to the Chief Minister and Higher Education secretary Kamran Rizvi said the government was totally against any ban or dress code and that girls were free to wear jeans in colleges.

“No aided college which gets grants from the government is authorised to formulate any order which is against the policy of the government. We’ve never issued any order on a dress code and the order of the principals’ council holds no water,” he said.

Rizvi said state government officials had spoken to the handful of principals of degree colleges in Kanpur and asked them to withdraw the order. “If they do not withdraw this order, stringent action will be initiated against them,” he said.

The Lucknow University Degree College Teachers’ Association hailed the government order.
