Jimmy Carter's two-day visit to India on January 1, 1978 was part of a nine-day tour of seven nations. He signed the Delhi Declaration with Prime Minister Morarji Desai but his visit was caught up in controversy over India's nuclear ambitions.

As he was about to leave the country, Carter was caught on tape telling an aide that a "cold and blunt message" should be delivered to the Desai over India's nuclear plan.

Daulatpur village in Haryana was renamed Carterpuri to commemorate his visit and the day, January 3, became a village holiday.
