The government’s decision to increase the retirement age of teachers to 62is baffling when millions of our youth are unemployed. This step will further frustrate them. Instead of solving job problem, the government is creating more unemployment.

Nation’s report card

With reference to the report Jharkhand crisis (September 6), after 60 years of Independence, it is worth reviewing in which direction our democracy is going. Illiteracy, unemployment, economic disparity, corruption and nexus between criminals and politicians are threatening the bedrock of our democracy. Our politicians should stop destabilising elected governments. This only creates further hurdles in the way of the nation’s progress.

Decongest living space It is sad that the Delhi government has not been able to sort out the issue of unauthorised commercial constructions in the city. To make Delhi a world-class city, only shops selling essential items and services should be allowed in residential colonies.

The All-India Muslim Personal Law Board’s stand that if ‘Vande’ means ‘salutation’, Muslims should have no problem reciting the song, is a happy development (Mixed bag over Vande chant, September 6). The Muslim leadership deserves praise for trying to usher in a qualitative change in the political atmosphere of the country.

Quota unquote

Apropos of the article Milking backwardness (August 28), every caste, irrespective of wealth and status, wants to be included in the backward group to enjoy quota benefits. A mechanism to distinguish between the really backward and the creamy layer needs to be evolved soon. The government cannot dither on this.
