A large number of unemployed youths, who fetched up at the Employment Exchange here today, were all smiles following the announcement of the unemployment allowance. Over 16 lakh unemployed youths will be benefited by the scheme.
On hearing the news, youths flocked to the Employment Exchange to seek a detailed information about the allowance. In fact, what most of them wanted to know was the procedure to claim the allowance.
However, the exchange could not provide them with any information in the absence of any official communiqué.
An official of Employment Exchange on condition of anonymity said, “Our office was thronged by a large number of unemployed youths, but we have yet to receive an official communique.”
Vijay, one of such youths, said, “We want to know which agency will distribute the allowance or we would get it from the Employment Exchange itself?” Asif, who came from Aliganj to enquire about the unemployment allowance, welcomed the government decision. “I am registered at the Employment Exchange for last three years but I am still jobless. The allowance will give us some relief,” said Asif. Vivek Singh of Alambagh said, “We want jobs not allowance. The government must try and generate jobs for us instead of giving unemployment allowance.”
An official of Employment Exchange said, “The unemployment allowance will not be given to everyone. There will, of course, be a fiat on it. We will have to go through the directives carefully.”
Professor AK Bajpai of Lucknow University, said it would be difficult for the government to deal with the issue. A deficit Budget has been passed. Moreover, the fiscal health of the state is well known. “Thus, there will be more cess and taxes to arrange the funds for the allowance,” he added.
