The Bombay High Court has sent out a warning to students seeking admission to College of Physicians and Surgeons in Parel.
The court said students will be doing so at their own risk and that they should verify the credentials of the institution before seeking admission.
However, it refused to pass an order restraining the college from admitting new students.
A public interest litigation was filed by two doctors, Arun Date from Phaltan in Satara district and Dhananjay Kshirsagar from Bhor in Pune district, seeking direction to close down the institution established in 1912.
Petitioner’s counsel V.M. Thorat said the institution was conducting courses and awarding post graduate degrees and diplomas, which are not recognised either by the Medical Council of India (MCI) or any university. He said that the college was conducting the Fellowship of College of Physicians and diploma courses without approval from the MCI.
The petition states that the institution has no infrastructure of its own and its students are trained at 102 government, semi-government and private medical colleges and hospitals across the state.
Thorat sought orders restraining the college from taking in students for next academic year. However, the division bench of Justices J.N. Patel and R.M. Sawant refused to pass any such order without giving an opportunity to the College of Physicians and Surgeons to reply to the petition. The matter will be heard on February 18.
