Former Supreme Court judge AK Lakshmanan has been appointed chairman of the Law Commission, law ministry officials said on Tuesday.

The appointment, filling a nine-month-long vacancy, comes close on the heels of the severe criticism by parliament's Standing Committee on Law and Justice, which in its report recently said "there should not be a gap even of a day" in the appointment of the Commission's head.

The present Law Commission was constituted after the term of the 17th Law Commission, headed by Justice M Jagannadha Rao, had ended Aug 31 last year.
Justice Lakshmanan retired as apex court judge in March.
