With the Iran issue scheduled to figure prominently in the second day of the ongoing politburo meeting of the CPI(M), veteran party leader Jyoti Basu on Friday criticised the UPA government's stand on Iran.

"Whatever the government is doing about Iran is wrong," Basu told newsmen at the CPI(M) headquarters in Kolkata before going in for the meeting.

The CPI(M) said on the first day of its politburo meeting here on Thursday that the party had not shelved the issue pertaining to Iran vote.

Party politburo member Sitaram Yechuri said there was no question of shelving the issues of Iran vote and airport "privatisation".

These were issues on which the party's opposition was "very clearly known" and "the party continues to hold the same position".

The party, however, skirted the issue of supporting the Samajwadi Party's plan to bring a no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha against the UPA government over the Iran issue.
