Saudi authorities have reportedly said the Keralite would only be let off after he pays Rs.5 million ($115,000) compensation to the families of the two victims.

M.M. Hassan, chairman of Roots-Norka, the Kerala government agency for non-residents, said they would seek Kalam's intervention to get the penalty amount lowered.

"The Kerala government will also chip in with a contribution," he told reporters here on his return after a visit to Saudi Arabia.
