Kalpana Chawla award for 20 science students

Allahabad University (AU) Vice-Chancellor Prof Rajen Harshe will be the chief guest at the function while father of late Kalpana Chawla will grace the occasion personally.
Speaking to mediapersons here on Thursday, PWCSA general secretary Prof KK Bhutani said that the award was started in 2003 in the memory of Indian born astronaut Kalpana Chawla who sacrificed her life for the cause of science high up in skies in the Columbia shuttle disaster. Prof Bhutani said that the award would be given to the meritorious girl students of the district who have topped in their schools in class Xth (board examination 2006) and have decided to pursue science at the Intermediate level.
The society will also honour four other girl students of the city who have passed intermediate from UP board and have secured the highest marks in Biology, Mathematics, Physics and Commerce.
The awardee girls may be of any caste, religion or family status. The awards carry a scholarship of Rs 1100, a memento, a book, a photograph of Kalpana Chawla and a merit certificate.
Prof Bhutani said that a new institution named Kalpana Chawla Career School for women has been started on charitable basis by PWCSA about four months back at Chak Zero Road. The school offers job-oriented short-term modular courses for the poor and needy girls and women on very nominal charges. The school aiming to empower women to join jobs in offices and business establishments offers courses on computer awareness, intelligent typing, MS Office, DTP, Internet, Tally and language courses in English, Hindi and Punjabi. PWCSA was planning to expand the school and the school will subsequently move to Jhunsi where land has already been purchased by the society.
