Amid all hullabaloo about seeking Sant Rampal's ouster and getting Satlok Ashram vacated, the Government Senior Secondary School at Karontha village of the district bore the brunt.

The Arya Samajis, on May 12, did not mind burning floor mats, plastic chairs and blackboard of the school.

The protest had turned violent when police stopped followers of the Arya Samaj from advancing towards the ashram. After police opened fire to control the mob, they hid in the school.

Ram Mehar Vashisht, the school's clerk who was asked by the education department to assess the losses incurred during the clash, told HT: "The protesters stole five fans, burnt school furniture, smashed glass almirah in which records were kept, and even damaged the walls of two classrooms."

He said the protesters had pulled out iron angles fixed on classroom windows to clash with the policemen. "At least 16 items of the school building were either damaged or stolen and the school had to be closed for the next three days in the wake of violence," he said, adding that he was still estimating the total loss, which was minimum Rs 50,000.

Block education officer Virender Malik said: "The protesters had also burnt motorcycles and belongings of policemen kept in the school."
