Jammu and Kashmir government said that former counter insurgency cop, Syed Ashiq Bukhari, who retired as senior superintendent of police (SSP) last year, will re-join the police department as deputy inspector general of police (DIG).
Bukhari had approached court before his retirement in January 2014 pleading that he be inducted into Indian Police Service (IPS) cadre.
It was in October this year when the high court directed that Bukhari should be treated as SSP since the day he has started functioning as officiating SP Budgam.
Earlier in May 2104, the court had also directed state government to forward his case to Union Public Service Commission for induction into IPS.
Officials in state home department said that soon after the court order, they had approached UPSC with the plea that Bukhari be inducted into IPS cadre with effect from 2006.
“UPSC has cleared the file but are yet to issue a notification. They may do it in a week or so,” said an official.
Bukhari was a prominent face in the counter insurgency operations of Jammu and Kashmir police.

{{/usCountry}}He earned the ire of people in 2010 when he was posted as SSP in Srinagar. More than 120 youth were killed in police and CRPF actions against spiralling protests across Kashmir.
Immediately after his retirement as SSP Srinagar in 2014, he was spotted sharing a stage with PDP patron and present chief minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed addressing an election rally in north Kashmir’s Kupwara town. The rumours were doing rounds that he was going to join PDP.
But owing to the criticism from civil society for ‘his role’ in 2010, the PDP immediately disowned him and even denied that he had addressed any election rally.
National conference has been describing Bukhari as the pioneer of the Special Operation Group (SOG) of the state police, which was infamous for human rights abuses.
