ILLEGAL POWER connections are proving to be a bane for about 2500 transformers, which are the lifeline for power distribution system in the city. Katia or illegal connections are putting immense pressure on these transformers resulting in their conking off in regular intervals.
To find out the reasons for transformers burning out frequently and often during the guarantee period, the KESCo management carried out an investigation.
The probe found illegal connections to be the main culprit for the failure of transformers and power crisis here.
Chief general manager (CGM) of Kesco PC Chaudhary reasserted that the major reason behind the conking off transformers was illegal connections.
“A person indulging in katia is not aware of the technical aspects. Katia damages the core of a transformer as it utilizes the phase to phase connectivity to draw power,” Chaudhary. He added 12 defunct transformers would be replaced soon.
A senior KESCo official, pleading anonymity, said even transformer companies were not ready to repair transformers.
“KESCo is already running short of transformers and rampant conking off has aggravated the situation,” he added.
Meanwhile, the CGM has ordered that repair of faults would be done only during rostering hours. “This has been done to ensure that regular power supply can be ensured after rostering hours,” Chaudhary said.
