The Supreme court on Friday refused to entertain a PIL urging its intervention in the ongoing debate on the Indo-US nuclear deal. A bench headed by Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan said it was Parliament’s job to hold a debate on such issues and the country was not lacking in proper advice. It also expressed inability to pass a direction asking the government to place the agreement before Parliament for a discussion. “We cannot give a direction that it be put before Parliament for approval.”

The PIL was filed by social activists Anil Chawla and Vipin Dixit who contended the 123 agreement and joint statements would jeopardize India’s sovereignty.
