Kerala governor P Sathasivam on Saturday sought strict action against the MLAs who triggered a pandemonium in the state assembly on Friday.
Terming the incident unfortunate, Sathasivam said he would be sending a detailed report to the President in this regard. He also asked legislative authorities to take steps to ensure such incidents are not repeated.
“The happenings on the floor of the House may even justify submission of a report to the President under Article 356 of the Indian constitution,” he warned.
Nine lawmakers were injured when they tried to disrupt state finance minister KM Mani, who is facing serious corruption charges, while he was delivering his budget speech. Chairs were thrown around, the speaker’s podium vandalized, a legislator fainted while another received a bite in the melee that brought shame to the state.
“The government has to ensure that such unfortunate incidents do not happen in future,” he said, seeking appropriate action against those responsible for the incident.
However, the governor rejected the Opposition’s contention that the budget was not presented properly and accepted the Speaker’s view that all norms were met.
Earlier, chief minister Oommen Chandy and Opposition leader VS Achuthanandan had met the governor to explain their position. The ruling coalition is likely to move a resolution on Monday seeking action against Opposition MLAs while the Opposition has decided to move the National Commission for Women to complain about the attack on women legislators.
