The e-mail, purportedly by a self-styled regional commander of Pakistan-supported Sikh terrorist outfit 'Babbar Khalsa International', was received on Saturday.

It threatened to carry out explosions in Shillong to avenge the alleged atrocities meted out by Khasi Students Union on Punjabis residing in Sweepers Colony (also called Punjabi Colony), and the oppression against the community.

The authenticity of the e-mail is, however, yet to be established. But the authorities are not taking any chances and have instructed the police to be on alert in sensitive pockets of the city.

"We are investigating the matter. But it is difficult to trace the origin of the e-mail as it has no header," a senior police official said.

When contacted Director-General of Police (DGP) BK Dey Sawian said the authenticity of the e-mail was being ascertained. "We cannot afford to take any chances. We have to take precautionary measures in the sensitive areas of the city and the police has been instructed to be on an alert."
