Kids bored of biryani unlimited

The very mention of biryani makes food lovers salivate. But thats not the case with the inmates of Muslim orphanage who have had so much of it that they prefer daal-chawal and subzi. Rohit Ghosh reports.

The very mention of biryani makes food lovers salivate. But the inmates of this Muslim orphanage look the other way at the mention of it. They have had so much of it so often that they are pining for regular daal-chawal and subzi.

There are 98 inmates, including 60 girls in the Muslim orphanage at Parade here. Very often local people feed these children, but most of the times they offer them biryani.

“People come here with food for the inmates. Most of the times it is biryani. Children are now just fed up of it,” said Raees Ahmed Khan, the manager of the orphanage.

“Nowadays if the children get biryani, they add daal to it. Such is the craving of the children for regular food,” he said.

According to Khan, for the people to serve the inmates with biryani is much easier than serving other dishes such as rice, pulses and vegetable curry. “One has to just order a restaurant and the dish will be ready. It can easily be carried to the orphanage in one big utensil,” he said. “But if you serve them plain food like rice-daal and subzi, you will have to buy them from the market, hire a cook and utensils. Then you should have proper space to cook them. Carrying different dishes to the orphanage is also sometimes is difficult,” he said.

Mohammad Shahnawaz Alam, a 12-year-old inmate of the orphanage said he has grown tired of eating biryani. “Earlier I liked biryani. But of late I have eaten so much biryani that I do not like it any more. Now I like to have daal and chawal,” he said.
