Kids of world unite to fight poverty

Over 5,000 children took part in a walkathon in the Capital to raise awareness on the plight of 300-million chronically hungry children of the world. The event ? Walk the World was organised by the United Nations World Food Programme.

Over 5,000 children took part in a walkathon in the Capital on Sunday to raise awareness on the plight of 300-million chronically hungry children of the world.

The event — Walk the World — organised by the United Nations World Food Programme was part of the global event being held across 110 countries.The 5-km relay saw children sporting Ts with ‘Fight hunger, walk the world’ message.

Anjali, a Class X student told HT, “We are here to extend our support for children like us who are not fortunate enough to even get three meals a day, leave alone an education.” The ‘Walk the World’ flag will be hoisted on Mount Everest.

The funds will be used for mid-day meal schemes in Chhattisgarh and MP. Before the walkathon, a painting competition was held for children aged between 5 and 18.

Over 2,000 children created vivid images of hunger and food. The event was flagged off at the India Gate by Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit.
