The week had started like any other day. Fitness enthusiast Verma, 55, woke up early, had a shave and went to the drawing room for yoga. His wife, Saroj, offered him lukewarm water, which he said he would have after his yoga session.

Saroj went to the washroom, hoping to have morning tea with her husband after his daily fitness routine. The revolver crack simply did not register.

"I thought it was the noise of a bursting balloon and did not take it seriously," said Verma's daughter-in-law Sandhya.

The tragedy in the Verma household came to light after Saroj came out of the washroom and wondered why her husband's exercise session was taking unusually long.

A disconsolate Saroj, surrounded by relatives and neighbours, said she could not recall her husband having taken out the revolver from their almirah locker.

Verma stayed with his wife, elder son Vikas, daughter-in-law Sandhya, two-year-old grandson and a servant in a two-storey house in Vikas Nagar. Younger son Amit, said relatives, was rushing back from Mumbai.
