Even though deep in the red, the UB group’s two airlines have reason to rejoice. For the first time ever Vijay Mallya controlled Kingfisher Airlines and Deccan combine has become number one in terms of market share as per latest data compiled by Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
Without revealing any figures, the UB group has issued newspaper advertisements claiming that Kingfisher Airlines and Deccan have flown more guests than anyone else — “Almost 3 out of 10 air travelers in India.” Though the ad hints at cornering nearly 30 per cent marketshare, Kingfisher Airlines is not making an official announcement yet — its spokesperson preferred not to comment.
Incidentally, a Jet Airways spokesperson dismissed the claim, and said Jet-JetLite is the market leader with a combined market share of 31 per cent, compared to Kingfisher-Deccan’s 29 per cent. “As per the figures circulated internally, we have the highest market share,” the Jet Airways spokesperson added.
Market share data available with HT for the month of January 2008 indicate that the Kingfisher-Deccan combine has 29.6 per cent market share — (15.20 per cent for Kingfisher and 14.40 for Deccan) — a tad higher than Jet Airways-JetLite combine’s 29.5 per cent (22.70 per cent Jet Airways and 6.80 per cent JetLite).
As per available data, Air India Domestic (a.k.a. Indian) has seen a sudden drop in market share to 13.9 per cent, IndiGo and SpiceJet have mopped up 10.9 per cent and 10.3 per cent respectively. This is the first time that IndiGo has gone over SpiceJet. Go Air and Paramount Airways reported 4.5 per cent and 1.3 per cent market share respectively in January 2008.
