Sources at the central prison at Mahalaxmi told Hindustan Times on Tuesday that a knife was used by alleged attacker, Sachin Shette to stab notorious robber John De’Souza.

Shette stabbed John 14 times on his chest and abdomen, causing his instant death.

The knife, sources pointed out, had infact been smuggled into the high security prison by John in the past. However, during the scuffle on Saturday, Sachin grabbed it from John and attacked him.

Deputy Inspector General of Police, Prisons, SP Yadav told HT that he had also come across an information about a knife being used in the crime.

“Earlier it was assumed that the sharp weapon used could have been moulded out of the aluminium utensils. However, the new development has come as a surprise to us too," he added.

He said the interrogation of the co-accused by the police could also give leads into how the weapon (if any) had been smuggled inside the prison. However, the police are yet to seek their custody.

A magisterial inquiry has also been instituted into the incident, as in case of any custodial death. Yadav said that the inquiry would establish, among other things, the negligence or lapse on the part of the jail staff (if any) in preventing the terrible incident. “Only then we will be able to pin down the erring officials,” Yadav added.
