The Kudankulam nuclear power plant in Tirunelveli district of southern Tamil Nadu is ready to roll and generate its first unit of electricity to be sold commercially form next month.
Top officials are looking at a tentative commencement date in mid-September, a prospect that was nearly thwarted by a massive people's campaign that brought all the work inside the plant to a grinding halt.
But deft handling by the state government with the help of Central government, the protesters were cleared and work could begin on the first unit of the 2 X 1000 MW nuclear power plant. At the moment, tests are being carried out inside the plant, ahead of loading nuclear fuel rods, stored safety.
The fuel rods can be loaded only after the formal clearance comes from the Atomoc Energy Regulatory Board. Plant site officials are expecting no problems and are expecting the AERB nod to come in within a few days.
“It is a thorough process and it is currently on. It will go into every aspect of the plant but we are confident of approval as the plant is absolutely safe,” said BS Sundar, KKNPP Plant Site Director.
