"I will oppose the guidelines if the apex court tries to impose restrictions on freedom of the press. Though I hold the Chief Justice of India in high esteem, the issue of guidelines for media is tantamount to another kind of emergency," he said speaking at the VK Narasimhan Centenary Homage ceremony.

Nayar said if information is restricted in a democracy, readers would not know what is happening.

Expressing disappointment about present day journalism, he said it has become "conformist, obedient and does not report something which is uncomfortable for the Government".

He said that journalism today had not risen to the expected standards and called on young scribes to learn from the lives of renowned journalists like of VK Narasimhan.
