A LARGE number of labourers and farm workers staged a demonstration, under the auspices of the Voice of People (VOP) organisation, at the district headquarters here on Monday.
They were protesting against irregularities in the Public Distribution System (PDS), especially in issuing of ration cards to the poor.
Speaking on the occasion, former MLA Anugrah Narayan Singh said the administration should take suitable remedial action.
Later, they handed over a memorandum addressed to the Allahabad divisional commissioner.
The district administration gave the assurance that a high- level committee would be formed to verify the identity of applicants for ration cards. The committee will be chaired by the ADM (Finance and Revenue).
The demonstrators said they would gherao the Vidhan Bhawan on June 22, if immediate action was not taken.
Advocate KK Rai and Govind Sharan of the VPO were among those present on the occasion.
