Barring chewing tobacco, Lalu Prasad is getting to eat whatever he likes at Ranchi’s Birsa Munda Central Jail, where he has been imprisoned since Monday after being convicted in a fodder scam.

The RJD chief loves onions—he has at least two peeled onions with salt with every meal. Though the authorities have dropped the vegetable from prison platter for its forbidding cost these days, Lalu is getting it regularly — from outside.

He is also addicted to paan (betel leaves) and chewing tobacco, but the jail manual makes no provision for supply of these articles inside the jail, not even to VVIP prisoners.

Since the jail manual is silent on whether paan can be consumed inside the jail, Lalu’s supporters say the leader shall be allowed to have it as it is not included in the category of banned tobacco substances.

“I am aware of his craving for chewing tobacco after the meals, so I had offered to bring a few sachets for him, but he said consuming tobacco inside the jail is illegal and he would not defy the rule,” said a senior RJD leader on the condition of anonymity.

Leaders who have been visiting him in the jail said Lalu prefers plain food, especially home cooked dal , rice, rotis, and ladyfingers.
