Land wars block 30 road projects in Noida

The legal battles have forced the authority to stop the construction of about 30 roads in two pockets — areas around Sector 74 and along the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway — where many developers have planed to set up colonies.

There's bad news for homebuyers trying to settle in Noida. It's not the real estate projects that are facing uncertainties because of farmers’ agitating to reclaim their land.

But the legal battles have forced the authority to stop the construction of about 30 roads in two pockets — areas around Sector 74 and along the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway — where many developers have planed to set up colonies.

The October 21 high court order said that the land would remain with builders but the authority would give more cash and bigger share in developed land to farmers for their acquired land. Since the authority is paying increased benefits to farmers, housing projects have resumed. But now, trouble has gripped road projects.

The disruption caused by court stay orders, the authority's failure to acquire land because of farmer protests and non-payment of compensation may, if not resolved, hit connectivity in about 30 sectors.

The authority began constrution but has now discovered that the roads, mostly of 45-metre width, cannot be completed due to disputes as several places. This will hit both intra-sector and inter-sector connectivity.

In some cases, the authority has found construction cannot go on because of encroachment. Farmers say it is their abadi land and cannot be acquired. The engineering wing of Noida Authority has prepared a list of all affected roads. The top brass of the authority will meet on Thursday to discuss the problem and its way out.
