"The Hill Cart Road to Darjeeling has been blocked by a huge landslide at Ghoom with one person feared trapped in the debris. Roads at Mirik, Sonada, Rohini and Pankhabari Road are closed," District Magistrate, Darjeeling, Surendra Gupta told PTI.

Gupta said the road clearing operation was continuing on a war-footing with hundreds of vehicles with tourists bound for Darjeeling, a hill station in West Bengal, stranded.

He said the National Highway 31A to Gangtok in Sikkim was blocked by landslides since last night was partially cleared of debris at Rambhi near Kalimpong for small vehicles to drive through.

In Sikkim, 77 cm rain was recorded since Monday, a report from Gangtok said.

It has been raining in the himlayan state since Sunday night and more was expected in the next 48 hours, the Meteorological office at Baluwakhani in Gangtok said.

The bad weather paralysed normal life with schools and offices registering moderate attendance and traffic movement affected by poor visibility.
