Lawyers clash with police in Kanpur

Lawyers assault policemen outside office of the SSP after a constable in Kanpur allegedly beat up an advocate.

Lawyers pelted stones and assaulted policemen outside office of the Senior Superintendent of Police in Kanpur after an advocate was allegedly beaten up by a constable here, leading police to fire a few rounds in the air and use tear gas to quell the protesters.

Many persons have been reportedly injured in the clash.

The agitated lawyers damaged over two dozens private and police vehicles outside the SSP office which they have gheraoed while demanding that an FIR be lodged against an accused police constable.

Lawyer Subhash Tiwari was on his way to the court near Colonelganj police station here when his scooter collided with the motorcycle of a police constable R Dubey. The furious policeman allegedly bashed up Tiwari following an argument.

After Tiwari narrated the incident to his colleagues in the district court here, the lawyers gathered at the Colonelganj police station and damaged the property there.

Later the advocates reached the SSP office here and assaulted the policemen outside there. They were demanding registering of a case against the accused policeman and police officers at the Colonelganj police station who apparently refused to lodge an FIR.
