Colombian singer Shakira has denied reports that she learnt the English language only because she wanted to break into mainstream music charts.

The Laundry Service star, who became an international sensation with her hit song Whenever, Wherever, said that she had learned English not because it would help her scale the US and UK music charts, but because it gives her the freedom to communicate with people she meets during her world tours.

"It's about being exposed to new cultures. It's about building bridges. It's also given me an opportunity to grow as a person," Contactmusic quoted her, as saying.

"People say you are what you eat. I prefer to think that you are what you've seen and the people you've been with. Being able to travel is one of the greatest things that has happened to me," she added.
