Raising anti-government slogans, party activists gathered at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi as part of the nationwide agitation against the government's decision.

Addressing the gathering, CPI(M) leader Nilotpal Basu said "we are approaching like-minded parties to launch a nationwide agitation against the unjustifiable hike."

Lashing out at the government, CPI national secretary D Raja urged all sections of the society to wage a nationwide agitation till the decision is reversed.

"We strongly oppose the government decision. Already, there is a steep increase in the prices of essential commodities and the oil price hike will have a cascading effect, which will increase the burden on poor people."

Condemning the "fifth fuel price hike during the two-year-old UPA government", All India Democratic Women's Association expressed fear that its inflationary impact would affect the lives of the common people.

Criticising the Centre's decision, the Left parties had on Monday decided to organise a nationwide agitation on June 13 to register their protest in this regard.
