Laskhar-e-Taiba terrorist Abdul Majid convicted for a 2011 bomb blast near northern command headquarters in Udhampur was awarded life imprisonment by a court on Thursday.
Principal session judge Udampur, RS Jain pronounced the quantum of the sentence on Thursday. He was convicted on September 1 by the court.
The then major general BS Pathania had a narrow escape, while one person died and six others were injured in the blast.
On the morning of May 2, 2011, Majid's accomplice Ghulam Sarwar parked an explosive-laden Maruti car near Birma Pul, which exploded through a remote control device. The car was purchased by Majid. Kuldeep Kumar a civilian had died in the explosion.
Majid, resident of Thanamandi Rajouri, was arrested within days of the attack while Sarwar is still absconding. He was convicted under sections 302 and 307 of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC).
The court had said the prosecution has established and proved the criminal conspiracy by Majid along with Ghulam Sarwar for his involvement in the explosion with an intention to strike terror and endanger the lives of the security forces and civilian.
