A life-size bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi was unveiled by his great-granddaughter Leela Gandhi in Auckland Sunday.

The statue, cast in India, was shipped to the Auckland Indian Association to mark the organisation's links to the legacy of Gandhi, who led India's struggle for independence, as a moral teacher, reformer and patriot, Radio New Zealand reported.

Gandhi was assassinated by a Hindu fanatic in 1948, the year after Britain granted India independence.
