The government is planning to make short films on the lives of leading scientists of the country for screening in schools and rural areas to popularise science among the masses.
The idea took root after the success of one such film Raghunath on the life of CSIR Director General R A Mashelkar, made by schoolchildren, which has become immensely popular among educational institutes in Maharashtra.
The Department of Science and Technology will make short films on the lives of scientists and researchers as part of its efforts to take science to the masses, official sources said.
The matter is likely to be discussed at next month's meeting of officials of the CSIR and Department of Science and Technolgy, they said.
Union Minister for Science and Technology Kapil Sibal was also in favour of an 'entirely different' approach to science and its popularisation among the people.
"We have to market science as we market physical goods and promote scientists as role models for society similar to those as cricketers and othersportspersons," he said at a function to release the four-volume book Learning Science authored by eminent scientist C N R Rao and his wife Indumati Rao on Thursday.

Terming researchers as 'beacons of the future', Sibal said, "It is time we look at our scientists in a light entirely different from other educational institutions."
