Hundreds of IT/ITES companies located in Cyberabad, the IT hub of Andhra Pradesh, were forced to close operations on Thursday with the state-owned Central Power Distribution Company Ltd(APCPDCL) resorting to a twice-weekly load shedding from 6 am to 12 pm.
The power utility had informed the consumers about the decision to go in for load-shedding till summer passes, but the IT/ITES companies appear not to ahve planed for the eventuality.
As a result, most of the small and medium companies, which do not have captive power generation facility, had to send employees to go home. “From tomorrow, we will reschedule the operation, by starting the office from noon. We may ask the staff to come on Saturday and Sundays too,” said HR manager of one affected software company.
Hardest hit are the small BPO companies. “We did not buy a generator so far because we never felt the need. Now we have to buy a diesel genset to keep our operations running, even if it means additional expenditure,” said the head of a BPO with clients in the US and Europe.
Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Andhra Pradesh on Thursday expressed deep concern about power cuts. “Measures like two day power holiday per week and other scheduled and unscheduled power cuts is adding to the hardship of the Industry. We urge the Government not to impose such hard measures on the industry,” Harishchandra Prasad, Chairman, CII Andhra Pradesh, said.
