Losing in golf will rankle for long

It is with a lot of disappointment that I narrate the big loss in my life. In fact, it was one of the biggest losses of my career and will take some time to get over. It was not just my loss but Andrew McDonald’s too, writes Daniel Vettori.

It is with a lot of disappointment that I narrate the big loss in my life. In fact, it was one of the biggest losses of my career and will take some time to get over. It was not just my loss but Andrew McDonald’s too.

Well, it didn’t take place on the cricket field but on the golf course and against our team’s coaching staff in Johannesburg.

The loss has hurt our pride and the coaching staff reminds us every other day. It was a simple bet which Andrew and I had placed with some members of the coaching staff on who was better at golf.

Till the end of 18 holes, the scores were even and there was nothing to choose between the two teams.

There was a twist in the tale. We had to go in for three play-offs to get a result.

Andrew and I snatched defeat or rather a win was taken away from us.

Since the loss, both of us have kept a low profile because we had to give the agreed sum of money for losing. I need all your support to get over this big loss and hope that I can recover some lost ground before I leave South Africa.

Viru has been compared in some sense to Inzy (Inzamam-ul Haq). But I guess, Viru is much different because he talks a lot and can be really good company. Inzy hardly spoke, but had his own sense of humour.

But boy, when Inzy and Viru get going, bowlers duck for cover.
