A four-year-old love story of two doctors from rival political families in Tamil Nadu ended in marriage, but the father of the bride was not to be seen at the event.

AIADMK Lok Sabha member M Thambidurai missed his daughter Lassya’s, 26, marriage with Congress veteran C Gnanasekaran’s son Naveen, 30, at Tirupati in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh on March 3.

“He did not reach the venue, despite the word that he was on his way,” said Gnanasekaran, who has been Congress MLA four times.

The Congress is an ally of AIADMK rival DMK.

In Thambidurai’s absence, his brother gave away the bride in accordance with custom.

In February, Lassya had approached Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa, seeking her blessings for the marriage, after her father reportedly failed to broach the subject with his party boss for months.

Even as the family waited for the CM’s response, Thambidurai’s mother fell ill, necessitating a quick marriage.

The Karur MP agreed to the marriage, but with restrictions — no more than 50 invitees and no posters.

Thambidurai has not spoken about the quaint political circumstances enveloping his daughter’s marriage.

Naveen, however, believes marriage is beyond politics. “We are certain Jayalalithaa would not have objected if my father-in-law had attended his daughter’s marriage.”
