TUESDAY’S INCIDENT of hooliganism, vandalism and violence by Lucknow University student leaders has left not only teachers in a state of shock but left their family members shaken too. Frenzied student leaders did not spare even women, children and elderly members of the teachers’ family. Irate mob used filthy words and manhandled all those who stopped them from barging into their houses. LU administration, the entire teaching community and LU Teachers Association (LUTA) condemned the unprovoked act of hooliganism of the students. According to the teachers, students should settle their scores with the LU administration and not with their families. Proctor AN Singh said: “It was most unfortunate as never in the past have we seen student leaders storming into the teachers’ quarters.”

A team of LU officials led by V-C RP Singh took stock of the situation on Wednesday. They visited the teachers’ houses that were ransacked by student leaders. V-C saw the damaged vehicles of the teachers. And if LUTA was to be believed, the V-C has agreed to compensate losses out of the student union exchequer. But, LU officials did not confirm this. A delegation of LUTA met the V-C and demanded security for their family and property. They entered into heated arguments with a section of teachers who are close to V-C and are holding some administrative posts. LUTA abused V-C’s close aides. But the argument was amicably resolved with timely intervention of senior teachers.
