The crucifiction scene, which drew ire from religious leaders in Rome, features the pop star wearing a crown of fake thorns and performing on a mirrored cross.

Johannes Mocken, a spokesman for the local authorities has said that if the 48-year-old singer repeats the act, she would be charged for insulting religious beliefs, an offense that's considered not only insensitive, but illegal in Germany. The Jesus-channeling act could earn her a maximum sentence of upto three years in prison.

Mocken said that authorities would be watching the situation closely.

Meanwhile, the ‘Hollywood’ singer has defended the routine, claiming its imagery is part of an appeal to her audience to inspire concert-goers to donate to AIDS charities.

"Madonna does not think Jesus would be mad at her, as his teaching of loving thy neighbor and tolerance is Madonna's message as well," Eonline! quoted Liz Rosenberg, Madonna's publicist, as saying earlier.
